Description

Huge early 20th century African tribal bronze vessel / pot,c1900. The quality of the casting is amazing and from the decoration it is most likely a Benin tribal piece, cast in the traditional lost wax process. Weighing in at 14kg this is undoubtedly a prestige or ceremonial piece and would be highly valued. The decoration is stunning with two large central figures, and two large snails in relief. There are also 2 turtles and the handles are in the form of snakes devouring a man. The entire body of the piece is covered in traditional tribal symbols and marks. Overall condition is good and the metal has taken on great colour/patina with small areas of Verdigris, all as you would expect from an old piece. This is one of the best African tribal bronzes I have owned in over 30 years of collecting and it would display well in a modern or traditional setting.
