Description

Fine early 20th century Fijian war club,c1920. Of typical spurred or gunstock type variants of this club are used for cutting, for ceremonial/dancing purposes and of course as war clubs. This example is a good weight,0.4kg,with traditional inscribed decoration, including a number of carved notches which traditionally would indicate number of kills/victims. Although undoubtedly an old example this was probably an early tourist piece and someone has carved 'Bala Fiji' into it which is a traditional greeting akin to hallo/good health etc. The wood has taken on great colour/patina and overall condition is good with no obvious issues.
