Description

Two beautiful very early Chinese carved wood statues, c1600. Dating from the end of the Ming dynasty they are finely carved with lovely detail and remnants of the original lacquer/gilt. Most probably temple pieces one statue depicts Buddha and has the traditional void in the rear where prayers/scripts could be placed. The face and pose are serene, and Buddha is depicted standing on a lotus leaf a traditional symbol of enlightenment. The second statue is a monk/sage/attendant figure and again it is beautifully carved and depicted. The wood has taken on great colour/patina. Both statues are heavy (2.2kg combined weight), structurally sound but have at some point in their lives been ravaged by woodworm. This is long dormant but treated anyway and the wear/losses/holes are now part of the character of the statues. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact me if you would like to view them or have any questions.
