Description

Rare mid 19th century carved Cowrie shell,c1860. These shells were carved and sold to passengers on the SS Great Eastern as souvenirs of their journey. The SS Great Eastern was designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel and launched in 1858. At the time she was the largest ship ever built and sailed routes to Australia and then North America. She was broken up in 1889.

The shell is carved with information relating to the ship: "A present from the Grt Eastern. Tons... 24000, Length 692ft, breadth 83,Depth 60". Overall condition is good with no obvious defects. An interesting piece of maritime history.
