Description

Very fine early 20th century African tribal bronze staff, c1910.

This is the finest example we have seen in over 35 years of collecting African bronzes and this is no doubt a prestige piece for ceremonial use by a Chieftain/high ranking tribal dignitary. It is most likely from the Yoruba tribal area (West Africa) given the quality of the craftsmanship. The staff is beautifully cast in the traditional lost wax method, it is heavy at 3.4kg and is profusely decorated with tribal figures, a coiled snake, scorpions, crocodiles etc. The handle is presented in figural form as a serpent head, with scales running along the serpents back. The quality of the decoration and level of detail to the figures, coiled snake etc is amazing.

The staff has taken on great colour/patina with some Verdigris and condition is very good with no obvious defects or issues. Please refer to the detailed photographs and feel free to contact us if you would like to view the item or have any questions.

Size: 98cm long x 3.5cm diameter at widest point, weight 3.4kg.
