A rare and unusual late-19th Century Indian carved wood puppet or entertainers' head, c1890.

The head is nicely carved and hand-painted, and originates from North India, probably Gujarat. It would have been used either for ceremonial purposes, or (more likely) by travelling troupes of entertainers or theatre groups.

The head is quite large and heavy. There are a few minor marks and age-related splits to the wood, but these are very much as you would expect from an old piece - and in our view merely add to its character. Overall condition is good.
