Description

A handsome and characterful pair of English oak armchairs dating to circa 1880, combining Arts & Crafts craftsmanship with strong Victorian Gothic Revival influences.

The chairs feature distinctive quatrefoil-panelled backs, pierced quatrefoil decoration to the arms, and further rebated quatrefoil carving. Constructed in solid English oak, they have an appealing ecclesiastical character and substantial proportions.

The chairs originate from a Methodist chapel in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, giving them particularly interesting architectural and social provenance.

A striking pair of late-19th-century ecclesiastical chairs, ideal for a period interior, Arts & Crafts collection, or as statement pieces.
