Historical Portrait President Franklin D Roosewelt

Description
Historical Portrait of President Franklin D. Roosevelt (1882–1945)Signed Mid-20th Century Watercolour by Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953)
Fully Inscribed Verso, Birmingham Provenance
An original early 1940s mid-20th century watercolour portrait depicting President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, executed by Birmingham artist Beatrice S. Bullock. This is a unique, hand-painted work capturing one of the most significant political figures of the 20th century at the height of his international prominence.
Subject and Composition
Roosevelt is portrayed in a composed three-quarter bust, turned slightly toward the viewer, creating a sense of presence that is both immediate and dignified. His posture is upright yet relaxed, conveying authority without rigidity. He wears a dark formal suit, white shirt, and patterned bow tie—attire closely associated with his public image during the 1930s and 1940s. His distinctive pince-nez spectacles reinforce both the period accuracy and recognisable identity of the sitter.
The artist renders Roosevelt with notable sensitivity. His expression carries a restrained smile, suggesting reassurance and quiet confidence, while the eyes convey alertness and intelligence. The overall effect is a balanced portrayal—approachable yet statesmanlike—capturing both likeness and character.
Technique
Executed in transparent watercolour, the work utilises controlled washes that allow the paper’s natural luminosity to model the facial features. The restrained palette and delicate handling are characteristic of mid-century British watercolour practice, favouring subtle tonal transitions over dramatic effect.
Historical Context
Painted during Roosevelt’s presidency (1933–1945), this portrait reflects his considerable international stature. In Britain, Roosevelt was widely regarded as a key Allied leader alongside Winston Churchill. His leadership during World War II and role in transatlantic cooperation made his image highly recognisable and culturally significant beyond the United States. This work represents that broader British engagement with American political leadership during the wartime period.
The Sitter
Franklin Delano Roosevelt remains one of the most influential figures in American history. As the 32nd President of the United States and the only individual elected to four terms, he reshaped the American economy through the New Deal and led the nation through the Great Depression and World War II. Known for his “fireside chats,” he cultivated a direct and reassuring connection with the public. Despite the effects of polio, he projected resilience, composure, and optimism—qualities reflected in this portrait.
The Artist
Beatrice S. Bullock (1878–1953) was an established Birmingham-based artist active in the early to mid-20th century. She resided at 14 Kingsleigh Road, Handsworth Wood, Birmingham, as confirmed by the inscription on this work. Bullock is recorded in Birmingham museum and archival sources and is known to have produced numerous watercolours. She donated a work to Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery in 1938 (Heathfield Hall) and exhibited locally, including at Park House, Handsworth Park. Her association with the Handsworth Historical Society further supports her documented regional significance.
Signature and Inscription
The work is signed with the initials “BB” to the front. The verso is fully inscribed with the artist’s name, subject, and Birmingham address, providing strong documentary evidence for attribution. Also present is a period price inscription in pre-decimal notation (£10.0.0), consistent with mid-20th century practice.
Frame and Presentation
Presented in a later gilt frame with double mount, complementing the period character of the piece. Ready for display.
A well-proportioned cabinet-sized portrait, suitable for a study, library, or curated interior.
