Thoroughbred Racehorse Persimmon Up Jack Watts

Description
The Thoroughbred Racehorse Persimmon (1893–1908) with Jockey Jack Watts, Prince of Wales, English School Oil Painting, circa 1898, in the manner of John Frederick Herring SnrSubject & Medium
English School, late 19th century
Oil on wooden panel, circa 1898
A historical sporting portrait depicting the celebrated racehorse Persimmon at Newmarket, with jockey Jack Watts mounted. Painted in the manner of John Frederick Herring Snr.
Composition & Technique
A naïve yet compelling profile portrait of Persimmon, positioned centrally with a formal, commemorative presence. The elongated proportions and slightly rigid stance reflect a provincial hand, while careful attention is given to the bridle, saddle, and tack.
The jockey is depicted upright and composed, reinforcing the formal tone typical of late Victorian sporting portraiture.
Particularly notable is the treatment of the horse’s head, with a small, sharply defined eye heightened by a pinpoint highlight, giving a strong sense of alertness and character.
The simplified racecourse setting, with white running rails and a low horizon, provides context while maintaining focus on the subject. A restrained palette of greens and ochres enhances the painting’s decorative appeal.
About the Horse: Persimmon
Persimmon (1893–1908) was one of the most important British Thoroughbreds of the late Victorian era, bred at the Royal Stud by the Prince of Wales (later King Edward VII).
He was sired by St Simon, one of the most influential and undefeated racehorses in British breeding history, and out of Perdita II, a mare of exceptional quality.
Renowned for his powerful build, balance, and calm yet determined temperament, Persimmon combined stamina with speed and consistency.
His racing record included 7 wins from 9 starts, notably:
Epsom Derby (1896)
Ascot Gold Cup
Eclipse Stakes
His Derby victory, achieved under royal ownership, was a major national event and cemented his reputation.
Following retirement, he stood at stud at Sandringham and became a leading sire, influencing Thoroughbred bloodlines internationally.
About the Jockey: Jack Watts
Jack Watts was among the leading jockeys of the late 19th century, known for his composure, tactical awareness, and balance.
He rode Persimmon in his most important victories, including the 1896 Derby. His measured riding style was well suited to managing high-class Thoroughbreds.
In this painting, Watts is presented in a restrained and formal manner, reflecting both his professional standing and the conventions of the period.
About the Owner: Prince of Wales (Edward VII)
Persimmon was bred and owned by the Prince of Wales, later King Edward VII, a major patron of British horse racing.
His Derby win represented a significant cultural moment, combining royal prestige with sporting success and drawing widespread public attention.
The Royal Stud at Sandringham, under his direction, became one of the leading breeding establishments of the era.
About the Trainer: Richard Marsh
Richard Marsh, based at Egerton House Stables in Newmarket, was one of the foremost trainers of his generation.
As trainer to the Prince of Wales, he prepared Persimmon for his major victories, playing a key role in the horse’s success.
Historical Significance
This painting commemorates a horse of major importance in Victorian sporting and social history.
Works of this type, produced by provincial artists, provide valuable insight into how famous racehorses were recorded and celebrated beyond academic art circles.
It reflects the intersection of sport, society, and monarchy in late 19th century Britain.
About the Artist
Attributed to an unknown English provincial artist working in the late 19th century.
The composition follows the established conventions of John Frederick Herring Snr, whose influence shaped British sporting art.
Such works were typically commissioned by owners, trainers, or admirers, prioritising recognisable likeness and clarity over academic refinement.
The naïve qualities and expressive detailing contribute to the painting’s authenticity and charm.

The paint layer is thin, consistent with provincial technique, with some ground visible.
Overall, the painting displays well with good colour and clarity.
