Painting Setters Gordon & Irish Gun Dogs C1880

Description
Victorian c.1880 Paired Setter Study — Colin Graeme, oil on Winsor & Newton prepared board, later gilt gesso frameLate-Victorian cabinet-scale sporting portrait by Colin Graeme (British, fl.1858–1910). Half-length paired study of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter in Highland moorland oil on Winsor & Newton prepared board, signed and framed.
Full Description (SEO / buyer-focused)
A refined late-Victorian sporting portrait, circa 1880, by Colin Graeme. This intimate cabinet-scale work presents a half-length paired study of a Gordon Setter and an Irish Red & White Setter, shown in profile against a Scottish Highland moorland. Executed in oil on an original Winsor & Newton prepared board — a period professional support — the painting demonstrates Graeme’s restrained, accomplished handling: warm mid-tone ground, translucent glazing to model form, directional brushwork to describe coat texture and feathering, with selective impasto to enliven the eyes and muzzle. The restricted composition concentrates expression and working temperament while an atmospheric treatment of heather and distant hills situates the sitters in authentic upland shooting country. Signed lower corner: “Colin Graeme.” Verso retains a Winsor & Newton prepared-panel label consistent with late-19th-century manufacture.
