Painting At Bay A Bear and Hounds Mortal Combat

Description
English School, 19th CenturyIn the Manner of Richard Ansdell (1815–1885)
At Bay: A Bear and Hounds in Mortal Combat
Subject & Medium
This dramatic 19th-century English School oil on panel depicts a rare and violent subject: a bear, cornered and desperate, beset by a frenzied pack of hounds.
Unlike the more familiar stag or fox hunts, the bear fight is highly unusual in British art of this period. The composition recalls Flemish masters such as Paul de Vos and Abraham Hondius, whose engravings influenced English artists. The scene embodies the Victorian appetite for natural history, exotic spectacle, and the theatre of survival.
Composition & Technique
Composition: The bear rises in the centre like a dark pillar of resistance, while the hounds encircle in diagonals of motion—leaping, snarling, and biting.
Palette: Earthy browns and ochres dominate, set against brilliant whites that highlight the straining hounds. Subdued greens and greys of the wooded backdrop sharpen the intensity of the central drama.
Brushwork: Vigorous, animated strokes capture fur and motion, while denser applications render the solidity of the bear. A softly blended sky tempers the taut energy below.
Style: Anatomical precision meets theatrical staging—an approach closely associated with Richard Ansdell.
Though intimate in scale, the panel radiates the drama of a monumental canvas.
About the Artist
While the hand remains anonymous, the work is executed unmistakably in the manner of Richard Ansdell (1815–1885), one of Victorian Britain’s most celebrated animal painters.
Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1840 elected full Academician in 1870.
Famous for his depictions of hounds, stags, otter hunts, and predator-prey confrontations.
Rivalled Sir Edwin Landseer, though where Landseer leaned sentimental, Ansdell embraced the vitality of combat.
This panel reflects the wide reach of Ansdell’s influence, inspiring provincial artists to adopt his muscular, dramatic style.
Frame
Presented in a new Larson-Juhl “Imperial” frame—a finely crafted, gold-leaf reverse-profile moulding designed to heighten theatricality. The reverse profile projects the image forward, while the lustrous gilding recalls the grandeur of 19th-century presentation.
