In General
A very charming, stylish and neat late 19th Century/early 20th Century elm and beech Arts and Crafts fan back chair circa 1910. It is distinctively styled and aesthetically very pleasing having a shaped cresting rail and the partially overlapping spindles individual to this design of chair.  It is supported with an H-stretcher.

We believe that this design is by Adolf Loos (see below) and designed by him in around 1908 for an apartment in Pilzen – then in the Austro-Hungarian Empire but later, after World War 1, in Czechoslovakia.  These chairs were subsequently utilised in many other projects by Loos until the late 1920s.  There are no markings as to manufacture but Alfred Loos furniture does not as a matter of course carry a maker’s mark.

The chair is very solid in construction with no loose joints and is suitable for a hall or other place where a side chair is required - being deliberately small in dimension.  It has a very pleasant antique patina showing some marks but they are entirely commensurate with its age - being around a century old.

Adolf Franz Karl Viktor Maria Loos (10 December 1870 – 23 August 1933) was an Austrian and Czechoslovak architect, theorist, and a pioneer of modern architecture and design.  He was inspired by modernism and a widely-known critic of the Art Nouveau movement.  His views and literary contributions led to the establishment of the Vienna Secession movement and postmodernism.  He was a proponent of functionalism, advocated for a simple, clean style and rejected excessive decoration, emphasizing natural and practical design.  This reflected the Secessionists' aim of creating innovative and integrated works of art and design.

This simple but very stylish chair embodies all these principles.
