Description

An early drop dial clock in an uncomplicated mahogany case - the well-proportioned case features a narrow dial surround, simple shaped earpieces, and a curved foot with a locking pendulum door, which retains its original brass escutcheon.

The locking cast brass bezel is concave in section, and is fitted with plastered-in domed glass.

The bezel combined with the narrow dial surround are characteristic of the earlier dial clocks - dial surrounds became wider through the Victorian period, and bezels became narrower and convex.

8-day fusee movement with shaped drop-shoulder plates, anchor escapement, the long pendulum with a bulbous brass bob.

The restored convex iron 11-inch dial is signed for Richard Fairey, London.

Richard Fairey is listed as working between 1811 and 1869. He first appears in the 1822-3 trade directory in the Watch and Clock Makers section as trading at 150 Tooley Street, Borough, London. He is also listed at the same address in the 1841 when he added “Jewellers” and in 1856 the directory in the Watch Makers section and also chronometer makers, clock makers and Jewellers.
