Description

This late 19th century French mantel clock is housed in a gilt four-glass case in super condition.

The original mercury gilding of the brass case is all still intact, showing no signs of wear or rubbing. The case has some interesting features to include dentil cornicing to the top and base and Corinthian fluted columns. The four beveled glasses are all in perfect condition.

The eight-day movement strikes the hours and the passing of the half hours on a bell. It is signed for Marti with their bronze medal. It has a temperature compensated mercury pendulum.

The two-piece white enamel Roman dial is signed indistinctly for Lawson & Sons, Brighton & ..., the original retailers. The dial has a recessed centre with visible escapement, and matching black steel fleur-de-lys hands.

Height 11½ inches (29cms)
Width 7 inches (17.5cms)
Depth 5¼ inches (13cms)

To be overhauled and guaranteed for 3 years.

MARTI, SAMUEL et Cie was a well-known maker in Paris in the mid-late 1800s. In 1863 he worked with two other well-known makers Roux and Japy Freres in promoting their clock movements, and won certificates for excellence as follows
1860 - Medaille de Bronze
1889 - Medaille d'Argent
1900 - Medaille d'Or
1931 - Grand Prix, Paris
The fact that this clock bears their bronze emblem gives us a date between 1860 and 1889, most likely towards the later end of that period.
