Description

A French striking mantel clock in a mahogany case with restrained quality carvings in relief against a matted background around the basket-top and around the base, and substantial wooden sound-frets to the sides.

MARTI, SAMUEL et Cie was a well-known maker in Paris in the mid-late 1800s. In 1863 he worked with two other well-known makers Roux and Japy Freres in promoting their clock movements, and won certificates for excellence as follows
1860 - Medaille de Bronze
1889 - Medaille d'Argent
1900 - Medaille d'Or

This clock is stamped with their Silver medal, dating the clock fairly accurately to the 1890s. The eight day movement strikes the hours and the passing of the half hour on a coiled gong.

The silvered dial is finely engraved around the minute track, and with matching blued steel spade hands.
