Description

A good example of a weight-driven Norfolk clock dating from the early 19th century, by Church, Norfolk.

The 44-inch slim case has a slide-off hood with moulded wooden bezel, over a long trunk door and convex base with beautifully figured mahogany veneers.

The 8-day single train movement with tapered plates has anchor escapement (pictured here prior to restoration), rounded lead weight and brass pendulum bob.

The original cream-painted 14" dial is signed for the maker, evenly etched with a patina of fine lines.

Longcase-style blued steel hands.

There are many fine and well documented clocks by Thomas Church (1712-1801) according to Norfolk & Norwich Clocks & Clockmakers by C. & Y. Bird. He had premises at St. Andrew's Steps to 1758, and later at Dove Lane, Norwich, taking on quite a list of apprentices over the years.
