Description

A fine and rare French fusee brass carriage timepiece by R.E.D. No. 99F, dated c. 1880.

The circular drum-shaped case has half-baluster pillars to the glazed band which allows sight of the movement from all sides. The case is surmounted by a ring handle and resting on toupie feet.

The 8-day movement has circular plates, chain fusee with only 10 turns, and a rare dual plane escapement with bimetallic compensated balance and silvered platform. The escape wheel is acting in the vertical plane, the pallets operate in the horizontal plane - the practical effect of this is that it is acting like a pin-wheel escapement. The backplate is stamped R.E.D. BREVETÉ PARIS 99F.

The perfect 3-inch white enamel Roman dial has blued steel spade hands.

There is detail of this clock on page 213 in Allix and Bonnert's book, Carriage Clocks, their history and development.
