Description

This is a good quality Pair of Early Victorian Sterling Silver Large Teaspoons in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoons have the initials J W elegantly engraved at the tops of the stems.

The teaspoons were made in Exeter by silversmith John Osment and date to 1853. John Osment was a specialist spoon and flatware maker based in Exeter. He was active between the 1810s and 1850s. He was followed first by his elder son Edward, who died in 1857, and then his younger son Philip who carried on the business into the 1860s.

Condition is good with just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 170 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 14.1cm / 5.5ins long and the pair together weigh in at a very respectable 42.1g / 1.48oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the three towered wall assay mark for Exeter, the date letter R for 1853, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J O makers' mark for John Osment.
