Description

This is an elegant late Victorian Sterling Silver Pepper Shaker. The shaker is an oval urn shaped design with a stepped foot, a reeded body and a domed reeded top with a ball finial. The interior is gilded. A unusual crest of a spotted horse is engraved on the front.

The pepper shaker was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is good, with just a couple of little dings in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of use. The lid fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker is 8.9cm / 3.5ins high, 4.4cm / 1.7ins wide and 3cm / 1.2ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 38.2g / 1.35oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the foot of the pepper shaker, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter a for 1900 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
