Description

This is a fine George III Scottish Provincial Sterling Silver Toddy Ladle. The ladle is in the traditional Fiddle pattern and has the letter G elegantly engraved at the top of the stem.

The toddy ladle was made in Dumfries by silversmith Joseph Pearson and dates to the 1790s to 1810s. Joseph Pearson was a specialist spoon and flatware maker based in Dumfries in South West Scotland. He was active between 1794 and 1817. Almost all of his items are locally marked in Dumfries. Although he did register a mark at the Edinburgh assay office in 1814 it appears to have been rarely used.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The ladle is 15.4cm / 6ins long and 4cm / 1.6ins wide across the bowl. It weighs in at a respectable 26.5g / 0.93oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The underside of stem is stamped with the local Dumfries marks of the anchor and wheatsheaf, a letter S probably for Sterling Silver and the I P makers' mark for Joseph Pearson.
