Description

This is an attractive George V Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The glass pot is sarcophagus shaped with tooth cut decoration around the body and a star cut base. The silver lid has a planished top with a central oval blank cartouche and is gilded on the inside.

The pot was made in Birmingham by W.J Myatt & Co and dates to 1921. The firm was founded in Birmingham by William James Myatt in 1895, initially as electroplaters. They became W.J. Myatt & Co in 1899, registered a silver mark at the Birmingham assay office and went on to open a showroom in London’s Hatton Garden. After WW2 they ceased producing Sterling Silver but continued to produce electroplate and pewter.

Condition is good, with just a small bruise to the glass low down at one corner plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 105 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pot is 9.5cm / 3.7ins long by 4.3cm / 1.7ins wide and stands 2.8cm / 1.1ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at 9.3g / 0.33oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 116.2g / 4.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the top of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1921 and the W J M & Co makers' mark for W.J. Myatt & Co.
