Description

Here we have a handsome Art Deco Sterling Silver Cigarette Case with a gilt interior. The case is oblong with a curved back to fit comfortably into a pocket. Both front and back are decorated with engine turned stripes and the cartouche on the front has a crest of a hand holding a thistle and the Latin motto Nemo Me Impune Lacessit (no one shall provoke me with impunity), which belong to the Irwin family of Ireland.

The cigarette case was made in Birmingham by Deakin & Francis and dates to 1938. Deakin & Francis have a proud history as silversmiths and jewellers dating back to 1786. The firm is still run by members of the Deakin family today. They are England's oldest manufacturing jewellers and still working from the same building that they started in back in the 18th century.

Condition is good, with just a few little dings in the body plus the superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time, much of its life having probably been spent in a pocket. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The case measures 8.3cm / 3.2ins by 6.3cm / 2.5ins and is 1.6cm / 0.63ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 71.6g / 2.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside of the case, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter O for 1938 and the D & F makers' mark for Deakin & Francis.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the case.
