Description

This is an elegant George V Sterling Silver Trinket Box. The circular box has a concave base, three bands of thread and bow decoration and a gilded interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The trinket box was made in Birmingham by Martin, Hall & Co and dates to 1912. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and Birmingham and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.

Condition is good, with just a small bruise to the bottom rim and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of use. The lid fits snugly onto the base. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The box is 5.5cm / 2.2ins in diameter and stands 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. It weighs in at a respectable 43.8g / 1.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the base, are crisp and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter n for 1912 and the M H & Co Ld makers' mark for Martin, Hall & Co. There is a second partial set on the outside rim of the lid.
