George IV Glass & Silver Mustard Pot, London, 1823

Description
This is an elegant George IV Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Mustard Pot. The oval handblown glass pot has a flat base, slice cut panels around the lower half and horizontal and vertical rib cut panels around the upper half. The silver top rim is line decorated and the domed hinged lid has a crest of a lion holding an olive branch engraved on the top.The mustard pot was made in London by William Bateman Snr and dates to 1823. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. She was succeeded by her sons Peter and Jonathan in 1790 but Jonathan died soon after and his widow Ann took over his partnership with Peter. They were later joined by Ann’s son William who eventually took over the firm and was finally followed by his son William Jr.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 200 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The mustard pot stands 9.8cm / 3.8ins high, is 6.1cm / 2.4ins wide and 3.4cm / 1.3ins deep. It weighs 171.1g / 6oz.
The hallmarks, on the front of the top rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1823, the George IV duty mark and the W B makers' mark for William Bateman. There is a second partial set on the inside of the lid.
