Description

This is a charming small Edwardian Sterling Silver Photo Frame. The frame is heart shaped with an embossed rim and has a visible picture size of 2.25ins by 1.75ins. The easel back has a thin leather covering.

The photo frame was made by renowned silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and assayed in Chester in 1902. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and Birmingham alongside showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. They remained in business until the mid 1930s.

Condition is fair with a couple of little dings in the silver and some wear and tear to the back of the frame that you would expect after over 120 years of good service but it remains perfectly usable and still looks very elegant. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The frame is 7.5cm / 2.9ins high, 5.9cm / 2.3ins wide and stands 5.3cm / 2.1ins deep with the strut fully extended. It weighs 16.5g / 0.58oz.

The hallmarks, at the bottom of the frame, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter B for 1902 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John and William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
