Art Deco Silver Inkwell, Wilmot Mfg Co, 1927

Description
Here we have a stylish and practical Art Deco Sterling Silver Inkwell. The inkwell has a broad circular base, weighted for stability, and a domed cylindrical body. There is a roll back type lid which opens to reveal a bakelite liner within a steel holder. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The inkwell was made in Birmingham by the Wilmot Manufacturing Company and dates to 1927. The firm was founded in Birmingham in the early 1900s by Walter Marks, brothers John & William Wilmot and Samuel Cohn. Initially electroplaters, they began manufacturing silverware in 1912 and also produced brass and chrome novelties. In the 1920s they began producing car parts and accessories and by the late 1930s they had moved entirely into this area.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents in the silver and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected with use and the passage of time. The roll back lid operates smoothly and securely and the liner is in good condition. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The inkwell is 11cm / 4.3ins in diameter and stands 6cm / 2.3ins high. It weighs in at 251.3g / 8.8oz but this obviously includes the weighting material in the base and the steel holder inside.
The hallmarks, on the front of the body, are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter C for 1927 and the W.M.Co makers' mark for the Wilmot Manufacturing Company.
Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the inkwell.
