Description

This is a top quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Vesta Case. The oblong case has a wavy ribbed pattern at the top and left hand side with a curving ribbed pattern to the bottom right. These flow seamlessly into each other as you follow the pattern round the body. The interior is gilded and there are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The vesta case was made in Birmingham by Nathan & Hayes and dates to 1890. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 135 years of use. The hinge works smoothly and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The vesta case is 4.7cm / 1.8ins by 3.7cm / 1.4ins and 1.3cm / 0.51ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 24.6g / 0.87oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside rim, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter q for 1890 and the N & H makers' mark for Nathan & Hayes. In addition, the top right hand corner on each side has the registered design number 124608, showing that the original design dates to 1889.
