Description

This is a handsome Edwardian Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Condiment Set. The cut glass salt, pepper and mustard have flat bases and deep cut tooth decoration on the corners. The silver stand sits on three ball feet and has an attractive shield shaped handle in the centre. The silver tops on the pepper and mustard are line decorated and the mustard spoon is in the Old English pattern.

The condiment set was made by renowned silversmiths James Dixon & Sons, with the stand and spoon being assayed in Sheffield in 1907 and the pepper and mustard tops being assayed in Birmingham in 1903. With a history dating back to around 1806 when it was a partnership between James Dixon and Thomas Smith, James Dixon & Sons was one of Sheffield's foremost silversmiths and electroplaters, particularly noted for their relationship with designer Dr Christopher Dresser whose groundbreaking silver plate teapot designs for the company are still being reproduced today. They were highly successful and remained in business up until the mid 1980s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.

Condition is good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just a small amount of salt corrosion on the upper side of the stand. The lid on the pepper shaker is secure and the hinged lid on the mustard is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The stand is 8.8cm / 3.5ins by 8.2cm / 3.2ins and stands 10.7cm / 4.2ins high. The weighable silver comes in at a substantial 170.7g / 6.02oz / 5.48toz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the set weighs 363.8g / 12.8oz.

The hallmarks are well struck and clear throughout. On the stand and the spoon they show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter p for 1907 and the J.D & S makers' mark for James Dixon & Sons. The pepper shaker and mustard pot have the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the date letter d for 1903.
