Description

This is an elegant late Victorian Cut Glass Perfume Bottle with a Sterling Silver Collar. The bottle has a flat square base, broad shoulders, a thumb marked neck and a sculpted stopper. The base is star cut and the corner panels are tooth cut. The silver collar is plain.

The perfume bottle was made in Sheffield by James Deakin & Sons and dates to 1896. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and Birmingham alongside showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. They remained in business until the mid 1930s.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass body, a small nibble to the base of the stopper and no dings or dents in the silver collar. The stopper may or may not be the original but it is from the same period and fits well. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bottle is 14.8cm / 5.8ins high and 5.7cm / 2.2ins square across the shoulders. It weighs in at 291.2g / 10.3oz.

The hallmarks on the silver collar are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter d for 1896 and the J D over W D makers' mark for James Deakin & Sons.
