Description

This is a beautiful late Victorian Cut Glass and Sterling Silver Quaich. The circular glass bowl has an elegant swirling pattern all around the body and a star cut base. The silver rim is plain and the pierced handles are decorated with scrolls and angels. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The quaich was made in Sheffield by Henry Stratford and dates to 1895. The business was founded in Sheffield by brothers William and Henry Stratford in 1854 as both silversmiths and electroplaters. After William’s death in 1877, Henry took sole control and later brought his four sons into the firm. They became Henry Stratford Ltd in 1900. Henry died in 1905 with his sons continuing the business until they ceased trading in 1930.

Condition is good, with no dings, dents or damage to the silver, just a small chip in the foot of the glass bowl and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 130 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The quaich is 16.6cm / 6.5ins from handle to handle, 10.3cm / 4ins in diameter and 4.2cm / 16ins high. It weighs in at 173g / 6.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the rim, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter c for 1895 and the H.S makers' mark for Henry Stratford.
