Description

Here we have a very stylish Early 20th Century Silver Plate Claret Jug. The jug is circular with a spherical body and a line decorated neck and finial. There is a mask of Bacchus, the Greek god of wine, on the front of the neck and a dog's head crest engraved on the front of the body.

The claret jug was made in Sheffield by Martin, Hall & Co and dates to between the 1900s and 1930s. The firm was founded by Richard Martin and brothers Ebenezer & Joshua Hall in 1854 as the successor to Roberts & Hall, in which Ebenezer had been a partner. The company manufactured in Sheffield and had showrooms in London, Birmingham, Glasgow and Sydney, Australia. They participated in many international exhibitions and won a number of awards. The firm went into decline with the economic downturn of the 1930s and had ceased trading by 1936.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The claret jug has a capacity of 1.42ltr / 2.5pts. It stands 24.2cm / 9.5ins high and is 11.5cm / 4.5ins across at its widest point. The jug weighs in at 890g / 31.4oz.

The underside of the base is stamped E P N S in Gothic letters for silver plate and has the M H & Co in a shield makers' mark for Martin, Hall & Co.
