George IV Dressing Table Pot, London, 1822

Description
This is a rare George IV Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver Lid. The hand blown glass pot is a slice cut cylinder with a star cut base. The silver lid is plain and engraved with a crest of a griffin's head above the motto "firm", a combination belonging to the Walsh family.Although common from the 1850s to the 1950s, it is unusual to find a dressing table pot from the Georgian era.
The pot was made in London by Charles Rawlings and dates to 1822. Charles Rawlings registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1817. He made a variety of items but his mark is most often seen on decanter labels and jar lids. He remained in business until around 1830.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, just one small ding in the rim of the lid and the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 200 years of good service. Being hand blown, there are a couple of bubbles in the glass but these are part of the manufacturing process, not faults. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pot stands 5.8cm / 2.3ins high and is 4.8cm / 1.9ins in diameter. The lid by itself weighs in at 18.0g / 0.63oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 146.1g / 5.1oz.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the lid, are a little rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter g for 1822, the George IV duty mark and the C R makers' mark for Charles Rawlings.
