Description

This is a fine quality Victorian Sterling Silver Kitchen Pepper. The pepper shaker is of upright cylindrical form with a scroll handle, a line decorated base and a domed pierced shaker top. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

Pepper shakers with handles are referred to as kitchen peppers because they were originally designed for adding ground pepper to dishes whilst cooking but they work equally well when used on the dining table.

The pepper shaker was made in London by the renowned silversmiths Edward Barnard & Sons and dates to 1897. The company has a history that dates back to 1680 when the firm was established by Anthony Nelme. Through partnerships the Barnard family became involved in the silversmiths in 1773 and took control in 1829, renaming the firm Edward Barnard & Sons. Their most celebrated creation is the stunning silver gilt Lily Font from 1840, which forms part of the Crown Jewels in the Tower of London and has been used for Royal christenings ever since it was commissioned by Queen Victoria & Prince Albert.

Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 125 years of good service. The pull off lid fits securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The kitchen pepper is 5.8cm / 2.3ins from rim to handle, 4.3cm / 1.7ins in diameter across the base and stands 6.5cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 73.2g / 2.58oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the side of the body near the handle, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the complex W M J S B R D makers' mark for William, Michael, John & Stanley Barnard with Robert Dudcock of Edward Barnard & Sons.
