Description

This is an attractive Edwardian Cut Glass Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The glass pot is oval with hobnail cut decoration all round and a flat base. The silver lid is embossed with scrolls surrounding a blank cartouche and has a crimped rim.

The dressing table pot was made in Birmingham by Henry Hobson & Sons and dates to 1904. Henry Hobson started his firm in Sheffield as a cutlery retailer and wholesaler, taking over the running of the business of John Pearce, his father-in-law, in the 1840s. He had premises in Sheffield, Birmingham and London and was joined by his sons and later grandsons. In the 1890s the firm began producing their own silverware and continued to do so until the firm ceased trading in the late 1930s.

Condition is good with no chips or cracks in the glass. The silver lid has two tiny splits in the rim but still sits comfortably on top of the pot. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pot is 7.6cm / 3ins long, 3.2cm / 1.25ins wide and 2.5cm / 0.98ins high. The lid by itself weighs in at 4.8g / 0.17oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the pot weighs 60.3g / 2.1oz.

The hallmarks, on the side rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter e for 1904 and the H.H & S makers' mark for Henry Hobson & Sons.
