Description

This is an attractive early Victorian Sterling Silver Decanter Label for Brandy. The label is oblong with a decorative surround of grapes and vine leaves and the word BRANDY well engraved across the middle.

The decanter label was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Yapp & Woodward and dates to 1847. Established by John Yapp and John Woodward in around 1845, the firm were jewellers and silversmiths who produced a wide range of items from flatware to cuff links and candlesticks to communion sets. They had a fairly short existence and appear to have ceased trading in the late 1850s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 175 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The label measures 12cm / 4.7ins from the top of the chain to the bottom of the label and is 4.6cm / 1.8ins across, so will comfortably fit around the neck of any normal decanter. It weighs in at 12.4g / 0.44oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the back of the decanter label, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the Gothic date letter Y for 1847, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the Y & W makers' mark for Yapp & Woodward.
