Description

This is a stylish Art Deco Sterling Silver Napkin Ring from the 1920s. The circular ring has engine turned decoration all around the body surrounding a rectangluar blank cartouche on the front.

The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Clark & Sewell and dates to 1928. James Clark and John Sewell established their business in Legge Lane in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter in 1899. They are best known for their silver smoking accessories but also produced small items of tableware and some good quality candlesticks. They remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The napkin ring is 4.1cm / 1.6ins in diameter and 3cm / 1.2ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 22.3g / 0.79oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the front of the napkin ring below the cartouche, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter D for 1928 and the C & S makers' mark for Clark & Sewell.
