Description

This is an attractive Set of Four Edwardian Sterling Silver Buttons. The buttons are circular and have a pierced design featuring the Greek goddess Artemis (Roman Diana), goddess of the hunt, who is portrayed with her bow and her hunting dogs.

The buttons were imported into Britain by H.W. King & Sons and assayed in London in 1901. The firm was established by Henry William King in London in 1896 and operated from the Silverdale Works in Charterhouse Street. Although based in London their mark is most commonly seen on items assayed in Chester. They produced perfume bottles, decanters and decanter labels, photo frames, buttons and card cases amongst other items and also imported pieces from continental Europe. The firm ceased trading around 1920.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each button is 2.3cm in diameter and the set of four together weighs in at 15.5g of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the fronts of the buttons below the figure of Artemis, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter f for 1901, the stamped letter F for foreign, showing they are imports, and the Kg & Sns makers' mark for H.W. King & Sons.
