Description

This is an elegant Set of Five Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Buttons. The buttons are circular with an embossed design of a young woman playing a harp.

The buttons were made in Birmingham by well known silversmiths Joseph Gloster Ltd and date to 1903. Joseph Gloster registered his first mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1888 and set up business at the Lion Silver Works. The firm produced a very wide range of silverware and were quickly successful, becoming Joseph Gloster Ltd in 1901. They remained in business up until around 1980.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 120 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each button is 1.5cm in diameter and the set of five together weighs in at 6.9g.

The hallmarks, down the sides of the buttons, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter d for 1903 and the J.G makers' mark for Joseph Gloster Ltd.
