Description

Here we have an elegant Pair of George V Sterling Silver Pillar Candlesticks. The candlesticks have square bases, weighted for stability, with stepped domed tops from which rise the straight circular stems with urn shaped sconces on the top. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The candlesticks were made in Birmingham in 1923, almost ceratinly by Broadway & Co, although the makers' marks are a little rubbed. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.

Overall condition is good, with just a few little dings in the silver and the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each candlestick is 16.5cm / 6.5ins high with the bases being 8.3cm / 3.25ins square. The pair together weigh in at 544g / 19.2oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The principal hallmarks, on the base of each candlestick, are well struck and clear to read with just some rubbing to the makers' marks as mentioned above. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham and the date letter y for 1923. The makers' mark clearly shows B & C and this is almost certainly the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co as no other mark matches up.

Shipping in the UK is £12 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the candlesticks.
