Description

This is a good quality Art Deco Silver Plate Six Slice Toast Rack. The toast rack has a rectangular base with rounded corners, which stands on four ball feet. The dividers have a square arched shape with rounded shoulders and a triangular handle. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The toast rack was made in Sheffield by world famous silversmiths and electroplaters Mappin & Webb and dates to around the 1920s/30s. One of the best known names in English silverware, the firm was originally founded in 1810 by Joseph Mappin Snr. In 1859 the company split into two parts which would become Mappin Brothers and Mappin & Webb. They were reunited when Mappin & Webb bought Mappin Brothers in 1902. The firm remained in the Mappin family until it was merged with Walker & Hall and Elkington & Co to form British Silverware in 1963.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant plate loss and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The toast rack is of a good size measuring 14.1cm / 5.5ins by 6.5cm / 2.5ins and standing 11.3cm / 4.4ins high. It weighs in at 229.9g / 8.1oz.

The underside of the frame is stamped Mappin & Webb at one end.
