Description

This is a good set of late Victorian Sterling Silver Coffee Spoons in the elegant Albany pattern. The spoons have slender stems topped on both sides with the distinctive Albany spreading fan and bead finial. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The coffee spoons were made in Sheffield by noted silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and date to 1898. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just a slight kink in the stem of one spoon plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 11cm / 4.3ins long and the set of six together weighs in at a very respectable 53.5g / 1.89oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the bowls, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the Gothic date letter f for 1898 and the JD over WD makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
