Description

Wonderfull quality Chinese Export Brass Bound Camphor wood tambour topped writing desk. These lap desks were traded by sea captains in the early 19th century & were used by military officers whilst on campaign. The Camphor wood gives off a very pleasent odour & has insect repelling qualities.
The whole desk is bound in brass & has 2 brass carrying handles on either side. The slope top & main drawer front have string inlay. The original straight edge is still with the slope.
By opening the main drawer the tambour top slides backwords revealing a pop up section of pigeon holes, this also has a tambour front. By raising the upper section of the writing slope you can access a hidden section with 3 secret drawers. The main lock ( with 2 keys )is replaced as is the brass plaque on the writing slope.
The green baize has been replaced.
A rare survivor.
