Description

Rare 19th century religious paper filigree / quillwork picture with a central oval wax seal surrounded by foliate quill work in golds & greens. The central seal is surmounted by a gold cross & has a gold heart beneath. The back ground is red. The frame is original & appears to be in original gilding.
On the reverse there is an oval paper disc which reads as follows.
A SMALL TOKEN OF AFFECTIONATE REGARD FOR DEAR MRS POWELL ON THE OCCASION OF HER HALF JUBILEE. APRIL 8TH 1870. FROM HER FAITHFULL OLD FRIEND. MOTHER MARY JOSEPH. STANBROOK.
We believe Stanbrook is Stanbrook Abbey, set in the Malvern Hills Worcestershire, in Victorian times the Benedictine nuns lived there.
The original fabric backing is still in place indicating that the picture has never been out of its frame. The original metal hanging ring has been moved from the top of the frame to the back of the frame.
