Description

Antique Brass & Oak Large Harvest Costrel.
This costrel / barrel / firkin / bevy was used to take cider down to the fields during harvest time, it would have hung from the horse harness. We believe this may be an example of the rare gallon costrels. Individual workers would often take a small costrel holding their daily allowance down to the fields. However these larger ones would have been used when larger numbers of workers were in the fields such as harvest time.
Most costrels were cooper made & bound in iron ( cheaper option ) this example has brass hoops showing it was made for a wealthy landowner. The brass hoops are fixed by copper rivets.
This would make a great quirky wine table, or have it hanging from a beam.
Condition is excellent for age with evidence of historic woodworm which is to be expected with these items.
Size height 34 cm, end is 20 cm by 19.50 cm approx.
