Description
The Tobacco Box - or - Jack Taking a Quid of Comfort in a Storm. An early 19th century tinsel print from the workshops of J.Fairburn. John Fairburn was a printer and publisher of chapbooks, caricatures and popular prints especially those portraying courtship. He traded from premises at 110 Minories in London.According to the fashion of the day some of his coloured prints were enhanced with appliqué brightwork -popularly known as 'tinsel prints'.
In their day they were not particularly expensive and if framed were, more often than not, turned out with one of quite basic construction such as the one illustrated.
