Description

A scarce unmodified MkII Canadian Ross Rifle bayonet: manufactured by the Ross Rifle Company, Quebec.rnDuring WW1 a great many Ross bayonets were armoury re-worked with a sharp point to give them better penetration, a feature that was lacking with the original hatchet pointthat is retained by this unmodified example. The blade of just over 10 inches is clean and bright and retains its service edge.rnThe weapon has not been subjected to abrasive cleaning thus its steel crosspiece and pommel retain the majority of their blueing: albeit their is some surface corrosion and a small amount of light pitting. The former should improve or be removed with careful cleaning.. The pommel bears the maker’s logo,” ROSS RIFLE CO. / QUEBEC / PATENTED 1907” and the obverse bears an acceptance/inspection mark, the pattern designation “11” (Mk II), the Canadian Government Ownership Mark, a broad arrow in a circle and the manufacture date 3/15,(March 1915). The bayonet attachment mechanism works perfectly. The grip spine bears two Canadian inspection stamp - as does each of the wooden grip scalesrnFurther stamping to the end of the pommel reads - 43 DCOR - 0 - 105 5/17.The latter indicating that is was re-inspected or re-issued during May 1917'rnrnThe wooden grip scales and are in excellent condition. The grip is marked with a Canadian inspection stamp.rnrnThe bayonet is complete with its original MkII leather scabbard and frog. The scabbard is in very good condition with little scuffing to the leather. Stitching is intact and strong. The tip of the scabbard has a steel button, bearing a Canadian inspection stamp. The foot of the scabbard is stamped with the manufacture year, 1916, the government ownership mark and the MkII pattern designation as well as the initials R.C. rnInsured postage to any UK address included in the price.
