WW1 Seaplane & Submarine primitive painting

Photos

Description

A lucky hit ? - fanciful depiction of a First War encounter between British float 'planes and a German submarine? - or an actual moment in history? ....either way this period amateur painting, almost certainly by a member of the armed forces, perhaps even of the RNAS, tells the real, or imaginary tale of the marauding U-boat that lay in wait for the ships on the horizon being warded off by their attendant float 'plans. We suspect that the 014 on the 'plane's tail denotes the date rather than the machine's number but research of both this and the artist could well prove fruitful. Painted on paper laid on card the image measures approximately 15 by 9 1/2 inches with the backing a little larger. As can be seen there is some age related foxing and damp staining.
