Circular horn snuff box from the first half of the 19th century. The inscription we believe to be Portuguese but it has defied our best attempts at its online deciphering so we have sent an image to a Portuguese gentleman to see what he can make of it - possibly a variation on the language spoken in one of its old colonies? Literal translation reads - "Only one prison, two hearts, together we make. Love unites us until death".....so what is the history of this piece? As we shall almost certainly never know it is easy to romanticise.
