Description

A 17th Century Carved Oak Panel Dated 1673 And Of Scientific Interest.

Recently aquired from a Dutch collection of chemist antiques.

This rare carved panel depicts a pair of snakes above a central roundel depicting a furnace with a chemists distillery bottle and the bordered date of 1673 at the base.

The representation of snakes were used to represent poison and also the Rod Of Asclepius the symbol of medicine depicts a serpent entwined rod.

So i presume this panel was once a cupboard door from a medicine cupboard or from the panelled wall of a college.

Signs of later use as a door and the back showing heavy signs of the pit saw.

9.5" wide

15" high.
