Vintage Silver Pill / Trinket Box, London, 1972

This is a charming Vintage Sterling Silver Pill or Trinket Box with a Gilt interior. The box has an embossed scroll and flower pattern around the body whilst the top has an embossed image of the Reynolds Angels.
The Reynolds Angels is the name commonly given to a painting by Sir Joshua Reynolds from 1786/7 which is formally entitled A Child's Portrait in Different Views. It is an image of the young Lady Frances Gordon. The painting was enormously popular in Victorian times and was reproduced numerous times as a decorative motif on silverware, ceramics, glass and in other media. It continues to occasionally be used today.
The box was made in London by D.J. Silverware and dates to 1972. D.J. Silverware was established in 1962 in London’s Clerkenwell district, the traditional home of London’s silversmiths. They started out as a repair service but went on to craft many fine quality silver pieces of their own, primarily tableware or small items for personal use. They remained in business up until around the late 1970s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the superficial external surface wear that you would expect from use and the passage of time. The hinge is in good working order and the lid snaps shut securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The box measures 4.8cm / 1.9ins by 3.8cm / 1.5ins and is 1.7cm / 0.67ins deep. It weighs in at a respectable 38.2g / 1.35oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the inside base of the box, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter r for 1972 and the D J S in a heart makers' mark for D.J. Silverware. There is a partial set of the lion passant and the assay mark on the rim of the lid.
